The Western Illinois football team managed to contain one of the nation’s top-scoring offenses on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to secure a Week 8 victory. After experiencing plane trouble while traveling to Youngstown, Ohio on Friday, the Leathernecks fell 24-14 to No. 15 Youngstown State during the Penguins’ Homecoming on Saturday. “We came up short,” senior linebacker Devon Butler said. “This one probably hurts more than any of the other ones because things just didn’t go our way.” Entering the game, the Penguins averaged 41.8 points per game. The Western Illinois women’s soccer managed to find a bit of optimism despite a 2-0 Summit League loss to Denver on Friday.
“All roads go through Denver,” Leatherneck head coach Ted Flogaites said. “We represented ourselves very well, defended like lions and certainly earned respect from the commitment and passion of our performance.
“We leave Denver with our heads held high and we were a credit to the Purple and Gold tonight.”
The loss brings the Leathernecks to 6-7-1, 1-2 in Summit League play. In its last eight games, Western is 2-5-1.
The Leathernecks were pushed back early, as the Pioneers (11-1-1, 2-0) took four shots in the first 10 minutes. In the 18th minute, Anna Willis rebounded Kristen Hamilton’s shot and found the back of the net for the first score of the game.

The Western Illinois volleyball team earned two 3-0 sweeps at Western Hall this weekend, beating the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Friday and the North Dakota State Bison on Sunday.
The Leathernecks started strong on Friday against the Jackrabbits. They quickly jumped out to an 11-4 lead, then closed the first set with a 5-2 run, winning the set 25-16. Ann Miller led the Leathernecks with seven kills.
Western took the momentum into the second set; it was deadlocked at 7-7 until Western used a four-point run to take a 11-7 lead. Senior Heather Smith chipped in six kills to help the Leathernecks win the second set 25-16, taking a 2-0 lead into the third set.

It was an ugly game at Hanson Field on Saturday as Western Illinois lost 38-14 to South Dakota State. A lot can be taken out of the game, and while there was a lot of bad, there were some positives that can be taken out of it too.
J.C. Baker‘s second quarter: Baker finished the game with over 100 yards, the bulk of which he accumulated in the second quarter. He had six carries for 66 yards, including two consecutive draw plays for seven yards each, and a monster 34-yard run in the second quarter to set up his own 3-yard touchdown run.
Linebacking corps: Zach Zenner came into this game with 858 yards on the season and averaging over six yards per carry. He also had scored 12 touchdowns, seven more than quarterback Austin Sumner had thrown for. The … Read More »
